The maps listed below are those of 19th century publishers in the United States. Among them is the publishing firm of Alvin J. Johnson. Johnson, prior to forming his own business was a book canvasser with the J. H. Colton Company of New York. Johnson became a competitor to both Colton and S. Augustus Mitchell by the mid 1800’s. By 1863 Johnson had taken on a new partner, Benjamin P. Ward (previously Ross C. Browning was Johnson’s partner and many maps carry that name). Asher & Adams were publishers during this same period and were located at 59 Beekman Street in New York:
